A Season of Change
Along with juggling a busy life, women my age are also dealing with a great amount of change . We are entering a new stage of life and facing challenges that we have never faced before. We have specific nutritional needs that are much different from those of men and younger women. Many of us experience mood swings, headaches, cravings, and all the other issues of pre-menopause . It's crazy. Somewhere around age 40 we look in the mirror and—yikes!—where did that paunchy middle come from? We seem to gain weight overnight while battling fatigue, irritability, and hot flashes. When faced with younger more attractive women in a gym or at the mall, our self-esteem drops. We too want to be beautiful, healthy, and active and get the most out of life.
On the horizon is the big “M”— menopause . This is a particular time that we start to experience weight gain. We often suffer from the unpleasant effects of hormone fluctuation. At menopause, we start to lose twice as much muscle—approximately one pound of muscle a year—as men. This can cause a shift in body composition and a decrease in metabolism. The Women's Healthy Lifestyle Project, funded by the National Institute of Heath, found that all women, whether thin or overweight, gain weight during this period of their lives if they don't change their lifestyles. In addition, entering this age range means an increase in the risk for certain diseases, like heart disease and osteoporosis. All this can lead a woman to feel that her situation is hopeless.
